Picture lying in bed at night, the house silent, and hearing a low engine-like drone that will not stop. You check the windows. You listen for traffic. There is nothing there. The person next to you hears nothing at all. It is one of the most persistent unsolved sound mysteries in the world, and now researchers say they finally have the Hum mystery explained.
That experience has a name, and after five decades it may finally have an explanation. The Hum mystery explained by a new study published in PLOS One points away from the environment and toward something happening inside the ear itself. Researchers led by Bonifaz Baumann of the German Center for Vertigo and Balance Disorders and Markus Drexl of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology tested the two leading theories against 28 people who report hearing the sound, and found that neither one holds up for most of them.
Here is what the Hum actually is, what the study found, and why the real answer may say more about hearing than about anything happening outside your window.
What the Hum Mystery Actually Involves
Between 2 and 4 percent of the world’s population reports hearing the Hum, most often described as a distant diesel engine, an idling truck, or a low electrical buzz. It tends to be loudest indoors, at night, when background noise drops away and attention has nowhere else to go. Reports date back to Bristol, England in the 1970s, when local papers began receiving letters about a droning noise nobody could trace, and similar clusters have since surfaced in Largs, Scotland, in Taos, New Mexico, and in towns across the US, Europe, and Australia.
For decades the leading suspects were external. Ventilation systems, heat pumps, road traffic and wind turbines can all generate genuine low-frequency noise, and nature contributes its own share through ocean waves and wind moving across open land. Investigators have chased all of these leads in specific towns, sometimes successfully. But a sound heard by isolated individuals in otherwise quiet rooms, undetectable to instruments and to the person standing next to them, does not fit a simple environmental source, which is what sent this research team looking somewhere else entirely.

How Researchers Tested Two Theories
Baumann, Drexl and colleagues recruited 28 volunteers in Germany through a social media campaign, all of them reporting an unexplained low-frequency sound, and put two hypotheses to the test.
The first was that hum hearers simply have unusually sensitive low-frequency hearing, picking up faint real sounds that other people’s ears filter out. Standard and specialized hearing tests found only limited support. Just two of the 28 participants showed meaningfully enhanced sensitivity at specific low frequencies, not enough to explain most of the group. The second theory looked inward, at the cochlea itself, which can generate faint sounds of its own as a normal byproduct of how the inner ear amplifies what it hears. The team searched for a measurable link between these self-generated emissions and what participants reported. They found none.
With both leading theories mostly ruled out, the published study points to a different explanation for most cases: a form of low-frequency tinnitus, a real perceived sound produced somewhere in the auditory system with no external or objectively measurable source at all.

Why the Hum Mystery Explained This Way Still Feels Unsatisfying
Understanding tinnitus helps make sense of the finding. It affects millions of people worldwide, producing ringing, buzzing, hissing, or humming, without any outside trigger. What makes the Hum a distinct and stranger case is that most people who experience ordinary tinnitus recognize fairly quickly that the sound is internal. Hum hearers often do not, because the sound presents as something environmental, and only after checking every plausible outside source, sometimes for years, do many conclude it must be coming from within.
Having the Hum mystery explained this way is precisely why so many hum hearers have felt dismissed rather than helped in the past. A sound that feels external but has no external source, and that specialized equipment cannot detect, is not an easy complaint for a doctor or a neighbor to take at face value. Drexl has said the field needs a better basic understanding of how the auditory system processes low-frequency sound and infrasound before it can properly assess reports like these, which suggests the tinnitus explanation is a strong lead rather than a closed case.
What Comes Next
Even with the Hum mystery explained by this research, the study’s 28 participants are a small sample from one country, and the researchers are careful to note that some hum reports almost certainly do trace to real external sources, particularly in towns where a specific machine or industrial process has been identified. What this research changes is the default assumption. For the large share of cases with no traceable outside cause, the most likely explanation is not a hidden machine, a secret signal, or a conspiracy. It is the listener’s own auditory system, generating a sound that is entirely real to the person hearing it and entirely invisible to everyone else.
