An insult meant to dismiss India’s unemployed youth as vermin has instead toppled a cabinet minister.
India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned Saturday after a viral movement calling itself the Cockroach Janta Party turned a satirical joke into what analysts are calling the biggest challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced in 12 years in power. Pradhan announced his decision on X, writing that he held deep respect for the aspirations of the country’s youth. Hours later, celebrating protesters filled the streets of New Delhi, and the CJP declared its nationwide demonstrations over.
Here is how a courtroom insult became a movement, how a 26-day hunger strike became its rallying point, and what it actually won.
How the Cockroach Janta Party Got Its Name
The movement’s name traces back to a single remark. India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant was widely reported to have compared the country’s unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites during a court hearing, and by May the phrase had been reclaimed online as a badge of pride, spawning a satirical group called the Cockroach Janta Party. Its founder, 30-year-old Boston University graduate Abhijeet Dipke, built it as a tongue-in-cheek protest movement rather than a conventional political party.
The joke found its cause almost immediately. That same month, leaked questions from one of India’s most competitive medical entrance exams forced roughly 2 million students to retake the test. The Indian Express reported at least a dozen students died by suicide in the aftermath, some leaving notes saying they could not face resitting the exam. What began as satire became a demand for accountability, aimed squarely at the minister responsible for India’s exam system.
The Hunger Strike That Made the Cockroach Janta Party Impossible to Ignore
Sonam Wangchuk, the engineer and education reformist who inspired a lead character in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, began fasting in solidarity with the CJP on June 28 at their sit-in near Jantar Mantar. Political leaders and Bollywood stars pleaded with him to stop as his health visibly declined, but Wangchuk kept going, telling supporters at one point that he would stay alive until the movement succeeded, whatever it cost him.
The protest widened well beyond exam reform, tapping into broader anger over unemployment and government accountability, and pulling in students, professionals and families. On July 20, a march toward Parliament drew thousands and ended in clashes, with police using tear gas and batons and mobile internet cut around the protest zone. Two days later, at 26 days into his fast, police forcibly removed Wangchuk and transferred him to a hospital. He ended his hunger strike Friday, negotiating directly with two federal ministers, and called the outcome a victory of peace, patience and perseverance.
What the Cockroach Janta Party Actually Won
Pradhan’s resignation was the headline demand, but not the only one. According to CJP organizer Ashutosh Ranka, the government also agreed to compensation for the families of students who died by suicide after the leak, a review of the movement’s five-point exam reform plan, and continued talks with protest leaders on next steps. Mobile internet access around Jantar Mantar was restored within hours of the resignation, after being blocked for most of the week.
Reaction split along familiar lines. Opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed Pradhan’s exit but demanded accountability for the police response to protesters and called for an apology from Modi. The ruling BJP’s national president, Nitin Nabin, praised Pradhan’s decision as reflecting the highest standards of integrity, and Modi had not publicly accepted the resignation as celebrations continued. CJP founder Dipke reportedly dropped to his knees on hearing the news before declaring simply, we have done it.
Why the Cockroach Janta Party Matters Beyond This Fight
The protests spread far past Delhi in their final days, reaching Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and more than a dozen other cities, a scale rarely seen during Modi’s time in office. Analysts have called Pradhan’s exit the government’s first significant concession to sustained public pressure in 12 years, and a movement that started as an internet joke about insects has demonstrated it can move a government most protest movements have failed to shift.
